Claire Davies, Corporate Governance Specialist and Mentor
Claire is a solicitor and qualified company secretary with over thirty years’ experience, principally in banking and financial services, and more recently, in the grocery/retail sector.
Claire has held the role of company secretary at Legal & General Group plc, Lloyds Banking Group plc and the Co-operative Group and has a particular focus on corporate governance and board management. She has substantial experience of supporting strategic change and large transformational projects, particularly for companies in turnaround. She has also worked in professional services where she gained experience of large regulatory change projects.
In her last two roles, as company secretary of Lloyds Banking Group (a position she held during the banking crisis) and the Co-operative Group, Claire has led major projects to devise and deliver bespoke corporate governance arrangements to support new business structures and corporate cultures. In the case of the Co-operative Group, this involved radical constitutional change to address well publicised business failings.
In both the above roles, Claire worked closely with the respective Chairman to build a new board and to address succession planning at board level. This also involved assessing board effectiveness and board composition, facilitating board evaluations and mentoring non-executive directors.
Having led large company secretarial teams, Claire has extensive experience of building and developing individual company secretaries to enhance their career progression.
Claire is a non-executive member of the Audit & Risk Committee for the UK Government’s Department of Business, Innovation and Skills. She has an LLB in Law from Southampton University and was admitted as a solicitor in 1986. She is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.
