Mike Smith, Mentor
Mike is an experienced chairman and non executive director, with more than twenty years NED experience supporting boards in both the public and private sector. Additionally, Mike had some 14 years’ experience as an executive member at The Rank Group, FTSE 100 plc Board, including the role of chief executive.
Mike has very strong international strategic investment and financial asset oversight expertise, and considerable M&A experience, with total deal values above £2bn.
He has well developed key stakeholder and investor relationship skills across the private, public and governmental sectors. He has dealt with stakeholders at ministerial and senior treasury level and has full understanding of governance, regulatory, pension and banking requirements and constraints.
He has successfully steered boards to achieve business turnaround in difficult economic climates through radical and creative business re-engineering strategies. In addition to his role as a mentor, Mike was chairman of the Tote, overseeing its privatisation.
His experience covers a diverse range of sectors, including pubs, restaurants, hotels, betting, gaming, printing, food manufacturing, motor and engineering.
His previous executive roles have included CEO at Ladbrokes, Director at Bowater plc and MD at Grand Met.
He has an MBA from Cranfield and is an ACMA.
